wow ok that did not work at all. something to work on for future posts
Nothing super exciting to announce on the blog yet. I've been working on my first comic, Dreamside, and chapter 0 should be out either by the end of this month or early September. I got tendonitis for a few days (whoops) because the pressure was too high on my tablet, which I hopefully have gotten over and fixed now. And I'm gonna start doing stretches every half hour like they tell you to.
And now I guess I'll do the conventional blog thing of telling you what media Ive been consuming recently:
book of the week!
Atwood, Margaret. Oryx and Crake. McClelland & Stewart, 2003.

This was a recommendation from my dad after I talked to him at length about some of the themes and technology in Dreamside, and while it has a very different and less fantastical vibe it was an incredible read. I love love love any media from the turn of the millenium that treats new technology as a rapid, near-future cyberpunk threat. The internet and gene engineering are gonna take over the world but they still run on dialup and CD-roms? That is beautiful to me.
This book is very sinister and not always an easy read. I got some weird dreams as I was going through it. But Biopunk is a deeply underrated genre and, what can I say. You had me at beakless, boneless, eyeless chickens that sit motionless in a lab and have to be fed slop once a day through a hole in the top of their body. A strong recommend for anyone into dystopian literature or sci-fi horror.
game of the week!
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Directed by Ragnar Tørnquist, Funcom / Aspyr, 2006. PC game.
A lot of people use "adventure game" as a synonym for "point-and-click adventure" and this game is a great example of a NON-point and click adventure game. And for being from 2006, it's incredibly non-clunky. It's honestly aged amazingly; I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone with a machine that can run it. I got it working on Crossover 26 perfectly fine after a few tweaks. Even the puzzles are usually pretty solvable, without the sort of moon logic you might expect from the genre.
anime of the week!
Serial Experiments Lain. Directed by Ryūtarō Nakamura, Triangle Staff, 1998.
The PS1 game is pretty cool, too, but I don't recommend that anyone play it.
song of the week!
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Black Hot Soup (DJ Shadow "My Own Reality" Re-Write)
I love a meaty bass sample and a crunchy canned drum machine. Nothing could be better. Gizzheads need to put some respect on this album.
